Lessons Learned: Week 11

Week 11 of our program was about reflection and looking forward to Demo Day next week!

As we reflect on our program heading into the final week before Demo Day week, we are grateful for the wonderful cohort that has joined us in Hartford and we are excited about the new adventures they have ahead of them.

Grant Thorton started out the week on tax day April 15. They showed no fatigue after helping all their clients through tax season and lead an engaging session on financial planning, budgeting, and cash flow.  They even came with some wonderful gifts for our startups. Thank you to Mike Noterangelo and Dennis M Sweeney, Jr.for their time and for the donation of discounted UBER rates to alleviate some parking congestion on Demo Day. On Demo Day, use code HIHDEMODAY2019EVENT to receive the discount.

We are thankful for all our partners who continue to support our program and our startups.  They all came to join us for a partner meeting this week as we shared the mid-program report on the startups views the program after completing 7 weeks.  We celebrated the positive outcomes and brainstormed how to improve in other areas. The goal is to deliver a quality program that will continue to attract the best and brightest startups to Hartford.

We took a  road trip to Boston to emerge ourselves in a wider startup, investor and insurtech ecosystem.  To our surprise, over 150 RSVPed to meet the startups from Hartford InsurTech Hub, the DCU Fintech center, and Bonbillo!   Many thanks to Vasilios Roussos Managing Director at the DCU FinTech Innovation Center for hosting us for the second event and to Michael Albert and Allan Egbert Jr. of  InsurTech Boston and co-founders of Ask Kodiak for including their network in our invitations. Brand new introductions were made and connections to other insurers and investors for every startup who attended.  Many got to visit Boston a bit as well and plan to go back.

CT Innovations met with many of the companies to review the programs and offerings of Connecticut Innovations.

Bill Sullivan, Vice President- Global Head of Financial Services Market from Capgeini discussed in-depth insights on innovation trends in the insurance industry.  Many of the facts and figures he shared gave insight into how large corporations best to work with startups and how much they value external innovation. The startups and Hartford InsurTech Hub team attended Real Art Ways Creative Cocktail Hour.  The event was focused on building a bridge between Hartford and Cuba brought some great music, food trucks, art exhibits and a bit of Salsa dancing with Hartford InsurTech Hubs Arek Wtulich and Devra  Sisitsky Executive Director of Makerspace CT.

We would not have such a great program without the support of many people in the community who help us with partnering, mentoring, connections, positive comments and more.  We were honored to accept the Community Favorite Program in the 2019 Connecticut Entrepreneur Awards! and thanks to the community for placing your support and vote with us!

As we prepare for demo day, Hartford InsurTech Hub wants to wish a joyful Easter holiday and a peaceful and blessed Passover to everyone.
